Chloe Fineman’s most recent act was a one night only engagement hosting the 2023 Met Gala livestream. The Saturday Night Live star, who happens to be a die hard fan of Karl Lagerfeld, was live from the red carpet alongside Derek Blasberg and La La Anthony on Monday night. While this wasn’t Fineman’s first rodeo (she has attended the Met Gala twice before), holding court on the red carpet is a new role for the actress. Thanks to her quick wit, hours spent on live television, and unmatched ability to impersonate everyone from Meryl Streep to Drew Barrymore, she was perfectly primed for the occasion. So, how did the host choose what to wear for such an affair? For Fineman, working with Jackson Wiederhoeft of Wiederhoeft to create an on theme look, influenced by Lagerfeld’s Chanel era, was a no brainer. Wiederhoeft, who brought his first ever Met Gala ensemble to life in a matter of weeks, turned to Lagerfeld’s Look 53 of Chanel’s 2004 spring couture show for inspiration. “That collection was all about contradictions—graphically and texturally,” Wiederhoeft said. “Chloe’s look features a shimmering pink sheath, fully hand embroidered with cut glass beads, molded over a severely corseted base. These modern and clean lines speak volumes to our generation’s understanding of Karl—a person who defined, and was always redefining, classicism and modernity.”
In the days leading up to the main event, I had the opportunity to speak with Fineman about how she’s preparing for her role as co host, what this year’s “In honor of Karl” dress code means to her, and of course, the making of her quintessentially Karl look. This is maybe TMI, but I’ve had two very different Met experiences. The first one, with Tory [Burch], was a full day of glam and preparation. I was in a white dress and felt like it was my wedding. My sister kept yelling, “You’re getting married to your career!” I had hours of hair and makeup and nails and a facial. And then last year, up until the last minute, I was like, Am I going? At noon on the day of the gala, I got a text asking if I wanted to go. My friend Yael Quint, who is a genius stylist, had this Miss Sohee dress just in case, and I got ready in two hours. So, there’s no right or wrong way. But the luxury of time is probably most important.
