Sydney Sweeney stepped out in New York City this morning looking very Cher Horowitz. Wearing a minty green blazer and pleated skirt from Thom Browne, Sweeney resembled just like the preppy, suit wearing character from Clueless. She even had the button up shirt and tie to go with it. It’s a fun, summer ready take on suiting up that takes heavy cues from a schoolgirl uniform. Turns out, you can have fun with a sleek and professional look. But we have our eyes on her shoes in particular. The star chose to pair her black slingback pumps with a pair of white calf length socks. Socks and heels, you ask? Yes! It’s a quirky combo that was everywhere on the spring runways at labels such as Gucci, Etro, and Simone Rocha, among others. Done wrong, wearing socks with a stiletto can look like you’ve gotten dressed in the dark—but when done right, adding a sock offsets the sexiness of a heel and gives it a more playful feel. In Sweeney’s case, it worked especially well when styled with a skirt suit. It instantly made the buttoned up ensemble feel youthful and not so serious. If she worked in a traditional, fluorescently lit office building, she’d for sure be the cool coworker.
Sarah Jessica Parker’s personal style often overlaps with that of her alter ego Carrie Bradshaw – unsurprising given it’s a character she’s played on and off since 1998. One of Carrie’s fashion obsessions was black patent Mary Jane shoes, and this week at an event in New York the actor used just that style of shoe to add an edge to an otherwise everyday look of cropped jeans and a casual knit. One memorable scene in season four of Sex and the City finds Carrie exploring the fashion cupboard at Vogue, where she happens upon a pair of Manolo Blahnik Mary Janes (the Campari) she’d thought were an “urban shoe myth”. Those stiletto Mary Janes had just one classic strap across the foot, however SJP’s latest pair have a bolder design, with three straps going up the ankle.
